Wow. ALL CAPS Arial and a chart saved as a lossy-ass JPG instead of a PNG. This might just be my least favorite thing on the Internet right now.

Your Guide to the Tumblr Avatar

So, let’s say you see a Tumblr avatar/favicon image you really like. Clearly, your browser can see it, so somewhere in the mangled spaghetti mass of the internet, there is a file you can download.

Right-clicking on the dashboard will not get you the expected “save image as” or open in a new tab. You gotta a) inspect element (from the dashboard) or b) go to their Tumblr page and view source.

If you’re an “inspect element” kind of dude, its in Styles, under body>background. If you view source, search “icon”—the link’ll be right after that.  Using Julia Segal (‘cause a lot of people follow her) as an example, it’ll be something like http://30.media.tumblr.com/avatar_ded324509e48_16.png

Now I bet you’re saying “Cosmo, 16 pixel images are far too small to be useful. Well, it just so happens Tumblr does a wicked job of making all the image sizes you could ever want. Just alter the last two digits before “.png” in the image address.

Here are the available sizes:

16px

30px

64px

128px

512px (won’t even fit in my template!)

Happy hunting!

there’s a “yo dawg yo” to be made out of Publishers’ Weekly.

and i want to view a larger image of the product i want that image to actually be bigger! having the same size image pop up in another window does not give me a closer look  sheesh!

Well, there’s always ctrl (or command) + plus sign. It will certainly display the image across more pixels, though that’s probably not going to help.

I often get asked things like “What do you actually do?”
The answer: Make line drawings in Word that illustrate what I’m trying to say in writing.

The Star is very academic. Well done, Malone. Bonus points for png.

“ummm, no. a lot of clients just got the ability to add more ‘clip-art’ to their crappy presentations.”

Oh, Velonews. Even when you do something cool, you manage to screw it up with broken images and JPGs that should be PNGs.
